Net Barriers - Emergency Arresting Systems
HOME / Arresting Systems / ESCO / Net Barriers - Emergency Arresting Systems
Curtiss-Wright Arresting Gear / ESCO net barrier arresting systems are installed in the overrun area of airfields. They are used primarily as emergency systems for non-hook-equipped aircraft, but are also for hook-equipped aircraft unable to engage a pendant cable.

NET BARRIERS
Multi-Element Nets (MEN) & High-Performance Nets (HP)
Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO has been the world leader in nylon & polyester webbing nets ever since their first patent in 1954 (developped in partnership with the French DGA). Since then, we have remained at the forefront in net design, always ensuring minimal damage to aircraft. Known as multiple element nets (MEN) or high performance nets (HP), we continue design new models, and to always identify the optimal solution for maximum safety. We have developed the best in class design & validation capabilities, feeding our vast experience into state of the art simulmation tools that not only reassure customers of compatibility with their aircraft, but also help us identify valuable improvements to their design.
NET RAISING DEVICES
Stanchion Systems for Raising Nets
Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO provides three net raising systems: the Type 5 pneumatic system with a raising time of 1.5 seconds, the BAK-15 or 61QSII hydraulic system, and the Mk-6 stanchion powered by an electric motor. When an aircraft engages the net, the net is released and wraps around the aircraft structure with minimal damage.
MECHANICAL ENERGY ABSORBERS
Friction Brakes, Water Twister® Brakes, and Textile Brakes
Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO friction brake solutions include BAK-12 and SmartArrest®, the world's most widely used hydraulically actuated friction brake. Ideal for next generation fighter aircraft and joint aircraft missions, the BAK-12 and SmartArrest® solutions support air forces that require optimal arresting performance for a wide range of aircraft weights and operations. Other energy absorption systems designed by Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO are the Water Twister® and the modular textile brake, a single-use system ideal for low engagement frequency.
ADDITIONAL PRODUCTS & SERVICES
Control Systems
Control systems provided by Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO offer the customer the ability to control multiple net, cable and mobile systems from a single control interface. The user can control the systems from the runway or tower, while also receiving critical status and troubleshooting information. The systems integrate with existing airfield infrastructures via copper, fiber optic, or radio communication methods.
Products & Services to Facilitate Surface, pit, or Mobile installation
The runway environment influences the choice of arresting system. In the case of a permanent installation, this may have to comply with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) directives. Curtiss-Wright Arresting Systems / ESCO therefore provides a complete service package: layout plans, civil engineering work supervision, installation supervision, user training and technical support throughout the product life cycle. These services can also be included in turnkey packages. The PortArrest® P-IV ESCO is suitable for temporary installations. It is a self-contained mobile arresting system designed to deploy and recover a squadron on permanent or temporary runways quickly and safely.
