September 18, 2023
CARNEGIE, PA — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) announced that Curtiss-Wright Corporation’s Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) facility in Cheswick, PA has been awarded U.S Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $100 million. For these two contracts, EMD will manufacture submarine secondary propulsion units (SPU) and the SPU installation structure, referred to as a rotational deployment mechanism (RDM). These are important engine components used by the United States Navy.
Curtiss-Wright EMD is a global integrated business that has operated in Cheswick, PA since 1952 and specializes in manufacturing critical application rotating electric equipment, namely motors, pumps, ship propulsion systems, and electrical generators that are integral to powering the U.S. Navy nuclear fleet. More than two hundred of the skilled trade employees at Curtiss-Wright are union workers represented by IBEW Local 1914.
"When we manufacture more items at home, we not only create good jobs—we also strengthen America's supply chains and make our economy more resilient,” said Rep. Chris Deluzio. “And when that manufacturing supports our military’s needs, we shore up our national defense and readiness. I am proud to announce more than $100 million in federal defense contracts for Curtiss-Wright's facility and its union workers in Cheswick. I will always fight to bring home federal investments to Western Pennsylvania, and I am proud of our role in protecting America.”
“We are proud to have been awarded these significant naval defense contracts, which build upon our rich heritage and long-standing relationship with the U.S. Nuclear Navy and continue to support one of our most critical facilities in Pennsylvania,” said Greg Hempfling, Senior Vice President and General Manager, EMS division. “Since the inception of nuclear-powered ships, Curtiss-Wright’s commitment to providing the safest, most advanced and reliable technologies has ensured our ongoing participation in important defense programs, which continue to receive strong Congressional support.”
“IBEW Local 1914, representing 230 skilled trade employees at the Cheswick facility, is always happy to see Curtiss-Wright receive any award which brings work in the doors,” said Zach Grabowski, President of IBEW Local 1914. “We are extremely proud of our heritage and the work we do for our military. And we see new contracts as a testament to the quality of work we can provide. As a labor union and with a contract less than a year away, we see these opportunities to provide workforce stabilization, and as a gateway to increase the number of represented employees who are able to perform such trained tasks. We will continue to support Curtiss-Wright and our customers, supplying top tier products, with pride and professionalism.”
