Curtiss-Wright Corporation Receives $6.9 Million Contract

September 09, 2008

To Supply Hangar Door for the DDG-1000 Zumwalt-Class Ship Program

The Curtiss-Wright Corporation announced today that it has received a $6.9 million contract from Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB), for the design, development and qualification testing of the hangar door to be fitted on the DDG-1000 Zumwalt-class destroyer platform as well as a production order for the door for the first NGSB-built ship. The total value of contracts for hangar doors could exceed $20 million with options.

The DDG-1000 Hangar Door builds on the multi-panel configuration and lessons learned from Curtiss-Wright’s highly successful LPD-17 Hangar Door project. The twin panel DDG-1000 configuration will exhibit low radar characteristics commensurate with the overall ship design and philosophy. The door will include multiple operating modes and will operate and survive under extreme load and shock environments.

The DDG-1000 Zumwalt is the lead ship in a class of next-generation, multi-mission surface combatants. It is being designed to require a smaller crew and be less expensive to operate than comparable warships. It will have a wave-piercing "tumblehome" hull form whose sides slope inward above the waterline. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Mississippi and Bath Iron Works in Maine will build the first two ships of this class.

Work for this contract will be performed at the Curtiss-Wright facility in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, with the delivery to NGSB scheduled for early 2011.
